# The 12 Houses in Astrology: What Each House Means in Your Chart

If the zodiac signs describe how energy expresses itself, the houses describe where in your life that energy plays out. A planet in Aries tells you the style. The house it occupies tells you the arena.

How Houses Work

Your birth chart is divided into 12 sections called houses, each governing a specific domain of life. The houses are determined by your birth time and location, which is why knowing your exact birth time matters so much.

The house system begins with the Ascendant (Rising Sign), which marks the cusp of the 1st House. From there, the houses proceed counterclockwise around the chart.

The Angular Houses (1, 4, 7, 10)

These are the most powerful houses. Planets here tend to be prominent in your life and visible to others.

### 1st House: Self and Identity

The house of "I am." Your physical appearance, personality, how you approach life, and the first impression you make. The sign on this cusp is your Rising Sign.

Planets here: amplify your personality and make those planetary qualities immediately visible to others.

### 4th House: Home and Roots

The house of your foundation. Your home, family of origin, emotional security, real estate, and the private self you show only to those closest to you. This house also represents the end of life.

Planets here: color your relationship with home and family. They describe what "home" means to you emotionally.

### 7th House: Partnerships

The house of "we." Marriage, business partnerships, open enemies, and one-on-one relationships of all kinds. The sign on this cusp often describes what you are attracted to in a partner.

Planets here: describe the kind of partners you attract and the dynamics that play out in your closest relationships.

### 10th House: Career and Public Image

The house of your public role. Career, reputation, authority, achievements, and how the world sees you. The Midheaven (MC) sits at this cusp.

Planets here: are visible to the public. They describe your career path and the legacy you build.

The Succedent Houses (2, 5, 8, 11)

These houses deal with resources, stability, and what sustains you.

### 2nd House: Money and Values

Your personal finances, possessions, self-worth, and what you value. This is about what you earn through your own effort.

Planets here: influence your relationship with money and your sense of self-worth.

### 5th House: Creativity and Pleasure

Romance, children, creative expression, hobbies, gambling, and everything you do for the pure joy of it. The house of what makes your heart sing.

Planets here: describe your creative style and how you experience pleasure and romance.

### 8th House: Transformation and Shared Resources

Other people's money, inheritance, taxes, debt, intimacy, death, and psychological transformation. This is the house where you merge with others at the deepest level.

Planets here: create intensity around shared resources and transformative experiences.

### 11th House: Community and Aspirations

Friends, groups, social networks, hopes, wishes, and humanitarian causes. This house describes the communities you belong to and your vision for the future.

Planets here: influence your social life and the groups you are drawn to.

The Cadent Houses (3, 6, 9, 12)

These houses deal with learning, adaptation, and mental processes.

### 3rd House: Communication and Learning

Short-distance travel, siblings, neighbors, early education, writing, and daily communication. This is the house of your immediate environment.

Planets here: influence how you think, speak, and process information.

### 6th House: Health and Daily Work

Daily routines, health habits, service to others, pets, and the work you do (as opposed to the career you build in the 10th). This house governs maintenance and self-improvement.

Planets here: influence your health patterns and approach to daily responsibilities.

### 9th House: Philosophy and Higher Learning

Higher education, long-distance travel, philosophy, religion, law, publishing, and the search for meaning. This is the house of expanding your worldview.

Planets here: create a drive to explore, learn, and find meaning beyond your immediate surroundings.

### 12th House: The Unconscious

Hidden matters, solitude, spirituality, self-undoing, institutions (hospitals, prisons), and the collective unconscious. This is the most mysterious house, governing what lies beneath the surface of awareness.

Planets here: operate in the background. Their influence is felt but not always understood consciously.

Empty Houses

Most people have several empty houses. An empty house does not mean that area of life is unimportant or absent. It simply means there is no extra planetary emphasis there. The sign on the cusp still colors that domain.
