Secondary Progressions Explained

While transits show what the sky is doing to your chart from the outside, secondary progressions reveal how you are evolving from the inside. Based on a simple idea: one day after birth equals one year of life.

The Day-for-a-Year Principle

The planetary positions on the 30th day after your birth describe the themes of your 30th year. The positions on the 45th day describe your 45th year. The relationship between the day (Earth's rotation) and the year (Earth's orbit) is a natural correspondence.

Key Progressed Planets

### The Progressed Sun

Moves about 1 degree per year, roughly one sign every 30 years. When your progressed Sun changes signs, your fundamental identity shifts. A person born with Sun in Aries will, around age 30, experience the progressed Sun moving into Taurus. The pioneering energy slowly gives way to a more grounded approach.

### The Progressed Moon

The most active progressed body, moving about 1 degree per month. It completes a full cycle in approximately 27-28 years. The progressed Moon's sign and house describe your current emotional focus.

### Inner Planets

Progressed Mercury shows how your thinking evolves. Progressed Venus reveals shifts in values and relationship style. Progressed Mars shows drive evolution. Outer planets barely move by progression and can be ignored.

Key Progressed Events

Progressed Sun conjunct natal planet: Major theme activation, lasting about a year
Progressed New Moon: A powerful new beginning, occurring roughly every 30 years
Progressed Full Moon: Culmination of what was begun at the previous progressed New Moon
Progressed stations: Planets turning retrograde or direct by progression mark significant shifts

Progressions vs. Transits

Transits are external events that happen to you. Progressions are internal evolution that grows within you. The most significant life events show up in both simultaneously. A major transit without a supporting progression produces events that don't change you inside. A major progression without a transit produces internal shifts not yet manifested externally.

The Deeper Teaching

The birth chart is not a prison sentence. It is a seed. Progressions show how that seed grows. Your natal Sun sign is where you start. Your progressed Sun shows where you are going. The journey between them is the story of your life.
