About Thurisaz

Thurisaz is the rune of reactive force — the thorn that protects the rose, the hammer that defends the gods, the giant that embodies the chaotic forces of nature. In Norse mythology, the thursar (giants) represented the untamed, destructive aspects of existence that the gods constantly battled to keep in check. Thurisaz carries this energy: it is necessary conflict, justified defense, and the understanding that some things must be fought to be preserved.

Upright Meaning

A protective force surrounds you, but it carries a warning: defense requires vigilance. Thurisaz is Thor's rune — the hammer that protects Asgard from the giants. Boundaries are necessary now. Someone or something threatens your peace, and passive acceptance will not serve you. Stand your ground, but fight only what must be fought.

Reversed Meaning

Defenselessness or excessive aggression. Either your boundaries have been breached and you feel exposed, or you are lashing out at threats that exist only in your mind. Reversed Thurisaz can indicate self-sabotage — turning the thorn inward, attacking yourself instead of the actual threat. Find the middle ground between vulnerability and violence.
